APE Course Objectives
ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH
LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
At Apopka High School, Advanced Placement Literature and Composition is a seminar course designed to develop the student's abilities as a reader and writer, especially as a critic of literature. This course for selected seniors is a college level class; upon successful completion of course work and the nationally administered examination in May, the student may qualify for credit in English at his/her college.
APE is both demanding and intellectually stimulating, requiring consistent
best effort. Emphasis is placed on independent thought, mature thinking, and
adult behaviors. Reading and writing assignments, both short- and long-term,
are important features of this course. Through various class activities, particularly
student-led seminars, students assume the responsibility for learning, while
the instructor serves as facilitator. The content of this course will include,
but not be limited to, that determined by the College Board Advanced Placement
Program. Students will be required to read a wide variety of materials, some
of which have mature content.
