The Quest

 

An internet journey

 

Introduction: You are the archeologist selected by a panel of eminent scholars to search for the treasures of the Anglo-Saxon period. The information you uncover will be used to educate the masses -- or at least your classmates. Below you will find a list of tasks to perform leading up to the final task. Keep all the information you gain in your notebook -- it will be the key that unlocks the mystery at the end of this quest.

 

 

The Tasks:

1. Read the Anglo-Saxon version of the Lord's Prayer. What similarities and differences are there from the modern version?

2. Summarize the Anglo-Saxon belief about warfare as it appears in Beowulf.

3. Scroll the left hand menu until you reach the discussion of Pagan/Christian beliefs. Read this section and summarize your findings.

4. What were the common builiding materials and designs? Research common building materials, desings, stone crosses and any other interesting links you find on this page. Summarize your findings.

5.Describe the methods of warfare and the composition of the army in Anglo-Saxon times.

6.How did the fyrd change under Alfred the Great?

7.Describe the clothing of the Anglo-Saxons. What differences were there between Pagan and Christian clothing?

8.Examine the various recipes and their ingredients. What conclusions can you draw about methods of preparation, types of food and eating habits?

9.Describe the types of games and materials used to make them. What can you conclude about Anglo-Saxon games?

10.This is a very comprehensive list of short articles on Anglo-Saxon life. Scan the list and select a topic which interests you. Summarize the topic.

11.How prevalent was slavery? Where did the slaves come from? How were they treated?


12.What were the classes of society in Anglo-Saxon times? Could people move within them? On what criteria were they based?

The Treasure:

As a team, you and your group members are to recreate a portion of Anglo-Saxon life in a presentation to the other members of the class. You will need to instruct, entertain, and immerse the class in your chosen topic/s. As part of your presentation, please include at least one Anglo-Saxon artifact, a game, and a food or beverage item, all of which must Anglo-Saxon life.
